Before Fame

After completing his World War II-era service in the United States Army, he made his screen acting debut in a 1949 episode of The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse and went on to appear in his first film, To Kill a Mockingbird (as the prosecutor character Mr. Gilmer), in 1962.

Family Life

Born in New York City, he was the son of Isobel Peckham and architect Paul Windom and the great-grandson of U.S. Republican Party politician and Secretary of the Treasury William Windom. His five marriages -- to Carol Keyser, Barbara Joyce, Barbara Goetz, Jacqulyn Hopkins, and Patricia Tunder -- produced a total of six children.
