Ritter is a son of the actor John Ritter and brother of actor Jason Ritter. His grandfather was country singer Tex Ritter. He grew up in Los Angeles. Despite having acted in high school plays and student films, following his father's unexpected death while Ritter was still in his teens, he originally decided not to pursue acting professionally. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007, he worked for three years as a Teacher in Argentina.
