She was selected to prestigious programs in Canada including the Telefilm Producers Without Borders Berlinale Coproduction Market, CMPA Telefilm Producers Trainee Program, and WIDC Cam 2018, Career Advancement Module.
Sibel has an MFA in Film from York University, and Honours BFA degree in Integrated Media and Film from OCAD University. Sibel received the 2018-2019 W. Lawrence Heisey Graduate Award in Fine Arts, which recognises outstanding ability and achievement in creative work, and the Miron Deca Memorial Award in 2019 for an ardent intellectual curiosity, a thirst for knowledge, and an interdisciplinary dedication.
Sibel's recent short film, Turkish Mesir Macunu (2019), was nominated for the Student Academy Awards, won an Award of Excellence in Liberation / Social Justice / Protest at Best Shorts Competition 2019 in US, and won Gold Remi Award in Best Dark Comedy at the 52nd WorldFest Houston Film Festival.
Her short film Hungarian Salami (2007) was nominated for Best Comedy at the 60th Yorkton Golden Sheaf Awards, and was considered for Canada's Top Ten Shorts by the TIFF Group. Her two times award-winning and critically acclaimed film, In the Penal Colony (2006), was a part of a trilogy in Teatro Municipal da Guarda together with Philip Glass's opera based on Franz Kafka's short story, and was selected to a special presentation, Celluloid Pearls in Kolkata International Film Festival, with Orson Welles' Kafka film "The Trial".
Twice, Sibel received the William F. White Proficiency in Film Prize, the best Jazz Film Award, Best World Music Award and Best Abstract Film Award with her other short films. Having a background in music, Sibel composed on her earlier films.
Her passion for music led her work with award-winning composer and musicians such as Latin Grammy Nominee Juan Garcia Herreroes, Sabri Tulug Tirpan, Hyun Sook Tekin, and Juno Award winners, Michael Occhipinti and Maryem Tollar.
In her fiction films, Sibel is interested in exploring existentialist psychology, issues of power, justice, and the future of science and environment. She portrays strong female characters who overcome social and psychological restrictions in their search for self.
