Sergei started his career in USSR (Moldova), where he directed short documentaries at the Moldova Film Studio. In 1996, he won The Stan Kamen Scholarship and was accepted to The American Film Institute in Los Angeles.
Shortly afterwards Sergei directed Sweet Dreams, a short film that has been screened at over fifty international film festivals, including Sundance and Telluride. Sergei also worked as a co-producer on such projects as To Each His Own Cinema and The Closer.
