He attended the University of Maryland, and graduated with a degree in radio/TV and film. He was also a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He then began his hosting career in 1990, and eventually moved to the Golf Channel, where he anchored between 1994 and 2000.

Between 2012 and 2015, he co-hosted his own radio show, SVP & Russillo. He subsequently left the show in 2015 when ESPN announced his promotion to solo anchoring a midnight edition of SportsCenter.
