His first film score was for the documentary Otto Messmer and Felix the Cat (1977) _ . His theater work includes incidental scores and musicals based on Gibran's The Prophet and Lewis Carroll's Thought the Looking Glass.

As a writer he is an authority on film music of the studio era and has written extensively on the subject for the Library of Congress and various film books and periodicals.
