Before Fame

He grew up in the town of Pingelly and played for his hometown club in the Upper Great Southern Football League. He debuted for South Fremantle in the WAFL in 1983, when he was 17 years old.

Trivia

A 1993 photograph of him responding to on-field racial vilification is one of the most famous images in the history of Australian Sports. In 2009, the Nicky Winmar Cup, a tournament for young Indigenous footballers, was established in his honor.
