He arrived in London in 1889 after his family fled the Tsarist regime. He debuted at Princes Hall in July 1890.

His father was Pianist Michael Hambourg who had been trained by Anton Rubinstein, and his brothers were Cellist Boris Hambourg, Violinist Jan Hambourg, and musical organizer Clement Hambourg.
