She attended Ludwig-Richter School in Frankfurt, Germany. With Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1933, she moved to The Netherlands with her family. Pushing back from oppression, she took Hebrew classes, attended synagogue, and joined the Dutch Zionist club for young people.

Many authors have written fan-based and interpretive editions of her lost diary. In 2003, letters of correspondence between her and her sister Anne were published.
