Kommer Damen was born on 1944 in Gorinchem, Netherlands, Netherlands. Kommer's father and uncle, Jan and Rien, founded Damen Shipyards in a shed near the family home in the Dutch town of Hardinxveld-Giessendam in 1922.
Kommer bought the shipyard in 1969 and introduced the modular shipbuilding concept to the construction of small boats and launches.
Damen Group is now one of Europe's largest family-owned shipbuilders, generating $1.7 billion in revenue worldwide in 2016.

Damen Shipyards was established in 1927 in the Dutch town of Hardinxveld-Giessendam by brothers Jan and Marinus Damen. In 1969 Jan Damen's son, Kommer took over, since when the company has built over 5,000 vessels.
