Jonathan grew up in a small seaside town on the south coast of England. Aged nineteen, he won a place on the 3 year Acting & Musical Theatre course at Mountview Academy in London. He went on to successfully audition for one of two full local authority grants, which allowed him to take up his place and complete his training.
On screen he has played werewolves, geeks, toffs and a variety of grumps. He played the role of Mike Carter in the BIFA nominated feature "Sam Jackson's Secret Video Diary" and in 2014 he portrayed the politician Nick Clegg in a highly successful political broadcast short for the Green Party.
In 2003 he was cast as the murderer William Hare in the stage play "Burke & Hare", alongside Rob Crouch as William Burke. Their on-stage partnership saw them awarded Best Double Act at that year's Edinburgh Fringe, and was the beginning of many collaborations between them, including two successful runs at the festival as comedy duo Clarkson & Crouch.
On stage, working on the London fringe and touring he has played roles from Mercutio and the Roman Emperor Caligula, to the comedy writer Johnny Speight, creator of Alf Garnett, a performance of which The Times review noted: "Clarkson brilliantly evokes the sourly anarchic wit that animated Speight".
A resident of South London since 1996, in 2010 he adapted "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" for the Jack Studio Theatre in Brockley, of which he is an Associate. After a sell-out run at the Jack, the rights were taken up by the Palace Theatre, Watford, for a further production the following year, to coincide with Halloween.
He continues to work across film, theatre and commercials, and has written a novel.
