John Derba’s zodiac sign is Cancer. According to astrologers, the sign of Cancer belongs to the element of Water, just like Scorpio and Pisces. Guided by emotion and their heart, they could have a hard time blending into the world around them. Being ruled by the Moon, phases of the lunar cycle deepen their internal mysteries and create fleeting emotional patterns that are beyond their control. As children, they don't have enough coping and defensive mechanisms for the outer world, and have to be approached with care and understanding, for that is what they give in return.

Graduating from Keene State College in May of 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Film Production and a Minor in Theatre, John Derba has been interested in filmmaking and acting since early 2003. In addition to being a part of numerous theatrical productions, he has had ample time to become accustomed to numerous areas of film production including sound design, editing, special effects, and most recently, cinematography.
His work in and around the filmmaking community has helped him understand the many variables behind cinematic technique, and continues to challenge him to improve in every way he can.John's interest in filmmaking led him to take his first Video Production course under Derek Roberts at Winnacunnet High School where he was first introduced to the craft and made various short videos.
As his enthusiasm grew, he began to take other film classes, and along the way began getting into theatrical productions under English teacher Peter Thomes. At the time of his senior year, Derba had appeared in multiple plays and musicals including "The Butler Did It, Again!", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", and finished off his High School drama career as Nicely Nicely Johnson in "Guys and Dolls".
During this time, he was also a part of the school's closed-circuit television network, WHTV (Winnacunnet High School Television), and recorded weekly news stories centered around various aspects of the high school which aired each Friday during the morning announcements.
He enrolled in Keene State College as a freshman in 2009 and already knew that he wanted to pursue a career in film production. He began to focus his attention more toward his career in the film industry, and began to part ways with his theatre background and completed his first ever visually-intensive film (no dialogue), "The Lost Socks", at the end of his Spring semester, 2010.
The film eventually went on to get accepted into the Keene State College Student Film Festival. The summer after his freshman year at Keene, John got accepted into an internship with a local production studio, Hatchling Studios located in Portsmouth, NH under the leadership of Marc Dole, where he began to start getting accustomed to life in the industry.
This position landed him a spot on the web series "Hosed", staring local comedian Juston McKinney, and Gary Valentine ("King of Queens", "Fargo", "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry").During his Junior year he decided to minor in Theatre, and began taking classes and performing in minor plays for credit.
He also signed up for the film production Senior Capstone class, Production 3/4, and was one of two sound designers. He would later take the class for a second time during his Senior year at school, and become one of the two art directors.
Graduating Cum Laude in 2013, he credits his time at Keene as being four of the best years of his life, where he met some of the best friends he'll ever have. He continually visits Keene as often as he can, and for the past two summers has acted in and helped out with the Theatre Department's production of "No Zebras, No Excuses", which is performed during freshman orientation and helps incoming freshman recognize the signs of abusive relationships and/or rape.
Presently, John is continuing to keep his dreams alive by actively seeking out filmmaking opportunities wherever they appear. He also helps with various other outside projects including weddings, promotional videos, and as a cameraman for Charlie Moore, The Mad Fisherman on NESN and NBC, where he's had the opportunity to work with celebrities such as Johnny Damon, Hulk Hogan, and Joe Vellano.
During his down time, John enjoys skiing in the winter, and swimming in the summer. He's an avid fan of learning about ancient cultures, most notably Ancient Egypt, and continually reads as much as he can about them.
He is a die hard "Survivor" and "24" fan, and his favorite movies include, but are not limited to the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, the "Indiana Jones" movies, "James Bond: The World is Not Enough", "Inception", and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas".
