During his time in the Financial Crimes Unit, he not only supervised 6 investigators, but also maintained a full case-load at the same time. One of the highlights of his time in the Financial Crimes Unit was a high-profile investigation involving the victimization of Channel 13 news anchor Dave Ward in an identity theft scheme.
Two suspects were eventually arrested and convicted in State and Federal Court. Another high-profile case he investigated and solved involved the victimization of Robyn Vermel (daughter of Enron's Ken Lay) in a check forgery scheme.
Throughout his career he earned several dozen internal and citizen commendations, including a Chief of Police Commendation, an FBI Investigative Award, and two Mayor's commendations.In the private sector, he assisted in the investigation of victim, David Ducovy, whose bookkeeper embezzled over a million and a half dollars from his company.
The suspect was eventually tried and convicted in Federal Court. John spent three years as a Special Investigator and Manager of a Special Investigative Unit for a Houston-based insurance company. While the manager he increased the year over year savings by 50% to over five million dollars.
As a private investigator John was a co-lead on a high-profile divorce investigation involving the suspected hiding of several million dollars in assets in cryptocurrency.John is a prolific writer and has had more than two dozen articles and white papers published on various fraud topics and investigative strategies.
He has been a major contributor to several news articles related to cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, including an article for CNBC.com and American Banker.John was an instructor on the topic of cybercrime and digital forensics for the Harris County District Attorney's Office, FBI, and United States Secret Service in January 2018, and was a featured Speaker at the 2018 Dallas Fraud Conference where he spoke about Business Email Compromise Fraud.
John attended Texas A&M University and graduated 5th of 70 in Academy Class #159 of the Houston Police Department.
