He never served as an assistant coach during his coaching career, taking his first head coaching position with Newfane High School in New York in 1975. He served as head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers from 2002 to 2007, taking the team to the Elite Eight in 2005 and Sweet Sixteen in 2006.

He was raised with eight siblings and married Kathleen Beilein in 1978, with whom he had a daughter and three sons including Patrick, who played for him at West Virginia.
