Recognized for his ability to compose in a great variety of musical styles, from classical and jazz to alternative and pop he has written scores for animated series & features , dramatic thrillers, indie movies, live action dramas, comedies and adventures.
In 1990, with a successful performance career already established, he began to write music which responded to a visual component. The first projects he scored were animation series and films such as HBO's "The Country Mouse and the City Mouse Adventures'" and PBS's award winning series "Sagwa the Siamese Cat" and Canada's first 3D animated feature 'Pinocchio 3000' starring Whoopi Goldberg , The soundtrack which was recorded with the Budapest Film Orchestra was nominated for a Felix in 2005 From there James continued on to score numerous features and television films and series such as "Les Muses Orpheline" in 2001, which he co-received a JUTRA award for Best Original Score, 'Silent Night' starring Elizabeth Hamilton for which he received a Gemini nomination for Best Dramatic Score, the prime-time NBC series "Crusoe" which he was also nominated for a Gemini.
James has won the SOCAN award for International Film music for 6 years between 2006 to 2013 After Recveing his master degree from the prestigious Eastman School of music James went on to record on over 40 albums, with 10 under his own name.
He has received six JUNO nominations for both solo albums and collaborative efforts and won a JUNO award for The album "The Merlin Factor" on which he performed and contributed his compositions and arrangements .
In 1992 James and his trio won the International Montreal Jazz Festival competition and placed second at the world renowned Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville. He has performed at many music & jazz festivals around the world, notably in Switzerland, France, Germany, the United States, and in his home country of Canada.
