Before Fame

He attended the Technical University of Munich from 1960 until 1965, followed by additional study at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His first major project was Kemper Arena in Kansas City; his career almost imploded after its roof collapsed in 1979.

Trivia

He escaped the humiliation of the Kemper Arena incident in 1985, when he designed the State of Illinois Center in Chicago; the popularity of the project, along with its unique design, earned him the nickname, Flash Gordon.

He married Deborah Lampe in 1970 and had one child.
