Born on 9 February 1978 in Voss, Norway, Gro Marit Istad Kristiansen is a retired biathlete. Her first year in biathlon was 1987 and she made her first World Cup appearance in 1996. Kristiansen won her first gold medal for the sprint at the 1998 Junior World Championships.
The 1998-1999 was very successful. She managed a 3rd place again in the sprint, 4th in the following pursuit and 4th in the mass start in Ruhpolding. After the World Cup went to Antholz-Anterselva once again Kristiansen proved that the sprint is her favorite discipline by landing a 5th place.
At the 1999 World Championships in Holmenkollen she placed 13th in the Individual and 17th in the mass start. Kristiansen finished 12th in the overall. During the 1999-2000 season she achieved her first career World Cup victory in the sprint in Brezno-Osrblie.
At the 2000 World Championships in Holmenkollen, placed 22nd in the Individual, 15th in the sprint, 39th in the pursuit, 25th in the mass start and 5th in the relay. The season concluded at 24th place in the overall.
The 2000-2001 season marked her victory in the sprint in Pokljuka and later a 5th place in the pursuit in Ruhpolding. Once more finished the season at number 24 in the overall. At the 2001 World Championships in Pokljuka, Kristiansen positioned 16th in the sprint, 46th in the pursuit and 4th in the relay.
The Olympic Games in Salt Lake City in 2002 arrived and she didn't make any impression. Her results were 53rd in the sprint and 40th in the pursuit. During the 2003-2004 season, Kristiansen had one podium for her 2nd place in the sprint in Hochfilzen and then a 5th place in the mass start.
At the 2003 World Championships in Khanty-Mansyisk, finished 46th in the Individual, 33rd in the sprint, 49th in the pursuit and 8th in the relay. Her place in the overall was 27th. One year later at the 2004 World Championships in Oberhof she won a gold medal with the relay team.
In the other events placed 23rd in the Individual, 16th in the sprint, 7th in the pursuit and 5th in the mass start. The 2004-2005 season was a good one. Kristiansen won the gold medal for the mass start at the World Championships in Hochfilzen.
Placed 26th in the Individual, 25th in the sprint, 10th in the pursuit and 5th with the relay. After that she had a good World Cup results by finishing 3rd in the sprint and 6th in the mass start in Pokljuka.
Finished at number 13 in the overall. The 2006 Olympics in Turin were her last. Kristiansen took part only in two events - the sprint and pursuit, where positioned 40th in both races. On 3 May 2007, she announced her retirement.
