The group dates back to 1918, when de Moraes' father bought a textile factory in Sao Paulo. Today the family still controls 100% of the business. Ermirio Pereira's sister, Maria Helena, is also a billionaire. Their brother Antonio Ermirio, a former billionaire, ran to become the governor of Brazil's richest state, São Paulo; he died in 2014. De Moraes earned his B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma, and is a member of the Advisory Council of AACD, a Brazilian nonprofit organization that treats disabled children.
