Duke Fishman was born Marcus Leo Fishman on July 15, 1906 to American parents in Manila, Philippines. Fishman moved with his parents to Hong Kong as an infant. Duke was forced to live in a Chinese orphanage after both his parents died by the time he was five years old.
By the age of eighteen Fishman was living in the South Seas earning a living as a lifeguard. He eventually moved from the South Seas to America and arrived on Catalina Island in 1933. Following a short stint as a horseman at the Annandale Golf Club, Duke went on to find work as a lifeguard.
He then became Avalon's Goodwill Ambassador and was subsequently named the City of Avalon's Official Greeter who often led visitors in singing the town's famous theme song "I Found My Love in Avalon." Moreover, Fishman also worked as an extra and stuntman in both film and television alike.
Duke was the Official Greeter for the City of Avalon for forty years. Fishman decided not to renew his contract as Avalon's Official Greeter in 1977. On December 22, 1977 Duke was found dead from a heart attack in his trailer home in Palm Springs, California by a friend.
Fishman was 71 years old. His body was cremated and his remains were brought back to Catalina Island where they were interred at Avalon's Cemetery.
