After a short foray into acting as a teenager (Key Exchange), Copaken spent her twenties as a war photographer, covering conflicts in Afghanistan during the Soviet pull-out; Israel during the intifadeh; Romania during the coup; the Soviet Union during their coup; girl gangs in LA and drug wars all over the world; and other major stories.
She then spent six years as an international TV news producer, first at ABC News, where she won an Emmy, then at NBC News. In 1998, she left TV news to write her first book, the bestselling Shutterbabe (Random House, 2001), which has been translated into over a dozen languages.
