Some Bernadette Giacomazzo images
Bernadette Giacomazzo is a multi-hyphenate in the truest sense of the word: an editor, writer, photographer, publicist, and artist liaison with a proven reputation for obtaining results.Giacomazzo began her entertainment industry career in earnest in 1995, when she was hired as an on-air DJ for WdSR-FM, Duquesne University's radio station.
From there, Giacomazzo contributed her voice -- and commentary -- to several lo-fi radio shows, including Don Campeau's No Pigeonholes radio show on KKUP-FM in Cupertino, California.Around the same time, Giacomazzo also began writing and photographing for many online publications.
These days, everyone "blogs" online, but Giacomazzo was actually in uncharted territory in the mid-1990s; she was usually the lone female writer and photographer in a sea of men, especially in the "online" writing world.
During her years at Duquesne, Giacomazzo wrote for several publications -- some of which are still in existence today -- including In Music We Trust, autoREVERSE, StormBringer, The Indie Journal, Radio Stethoscope, and RockZone.
After graduating from Duquesne, Giacomazzo returned to her home state of New York, where she founded Akasha Multimedia, and began writing and photographing for the legendary Island Ear (she still recalls those times fondly, calling it "the time of my life," and citing editor Michael Patrick Nelson as "one of the greatest editors of all time, if not the greatest.
") After the Island Ear ceased publication, Giacomazzo lent her writing talents to a variety of other publications, including Good Times, Long Island Entertainment News, and The Inside Connection. For a time, she also worked at the gone-but-not-forgotten WLIR-FM -- first as an intern in the promotions department, then as an assistant to the producer for Jeffrey Wands' Higher Minds show.
In 2005, with her master's degree in hand, Giacomazzo extended her hard-earned knowledge of the music industry on the lecturing circuit: first as an instructor at Nassau Community College, then as a guest lecturer at Hofstra University.
She also was a featured panelist at several prominent music industry conferences, including the Dewey Beach Music Conference, the Functioning Band Series, and the MEISA/MEIEA Conference. During this time, she was also recruited as an A&R scout for Epic Records.
In 2006, Giacomazzo's photography caught the eye of Splash News and Picture Agency, after her work was selected for an official New York Fall Fashion Week photography exhibit (sponsored by Black Book).
Thanks to Splash News, Bernadette's work has appeared in a variety of internationally recognized and respected publications, including Teen Vogue, People Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Post, Us Weekly, and The Daily Mail.
In 2007, Giacomazzo garnered further industry respect and attention when she -- together with author MJ Deskovic -- wrote Swimming with Sharks: A Real-World, How-To Guide to Success (and Failure) in the Business of Music.
Within two months of the book's completion, Giacomazzo and Deskovic were signed to a record deal with legendary punk label Conquer the World Records. The audiobook version became a best-seller on iTunes.
The success of the book continued when Stretch the Skies Entertainment offered a distribution deal, where the four-disc compilation sold out within a matter of minutes in FYE Stores across the United States, and even made the pop charts in Australia.
The book also received universal critical acclaim, was a front page feature on MSN.com, and gained endorsements from Hot Picks, Karma Microphones, and Halo Guitars.Later that same year, Giacomazzo also contributed stories to the best-selling Ever Dated a Psycho?, one about her own dating experience, and another about a psycho groupie obsessed with a NYC band.
The book was released, to universally favorable reviews, in the United Kingdom on the Short Books imprint.Giacomazzo also extended her talents to Hollywood -- her big screen debut was as a music supervisor for the major motion picture Winter of Frozen Dreams (which premiered on the Lifetime Movie Network in April 2009).
She went on to serve as a music supervisor for the independent feature Walkin' My Baby Back Home, and as the music supervisor for Rivers Wash Over Me, written and directed by Sundance Grand Jury prize winner John Gilbert Young, and premiering in June 2009 at the New York Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
She was also a music supervisory consultant for the "webisodes" of Hampton High Revealed. She served as the news editor of Go! NYC Magazine for nearly a decade, the executive editor of LatinTRENDS Magazine for five years, the eye candy editor of XXL Magazine for two years, and the editor-at-large at iOne/Zona de Sabor for two years.
As a publicist, she has worked with the likes of Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and his G-Unit record label, rapper Kool G. Rap, and various photographers, artists, and models. In 2016, Giacomazzo and Deskovic teamed up again to release the 10th-anniversary edition of the book that launched their careers, and called it "Swimming with Sharks: A Real World, How-To Guide to Success (and Failure) in the Business of Music (for the 21st Century).
" In 2018, Giacomazzo stepped her book game up again and released "The Gathering: Book One of The Uprising Series," which is the first of six books in her dystopian fiction series called "The Uprising.
" In the summer of 2018, "The King Bey Bible," a Beyonce Knowles tribute anthology featuring one of Giacomazzo's essays, will be released in bookstores nationwide.Based in New York City, Giacomazzo continues to work with a variety of actors, models, producers, and artists in Hollywood and beyond.
