Born and raised in Los Angeles, Andy Chen had always been drawn to cinema since he can remember. It started in childhood when he would use his parents' VHS, then later a Hi-8 camcorder to film family vacations, skate videos, and short films.

He went to the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, an after school film program at Culver City High School where he learned to shoot on super 16mm. In high school, he was shooting on Mini DV and editing all the media that would be shown at the assemblies.

He went on to graduate from California State University, Northridge with a degree in Cinema and Television Arts in 2008.He continued his real world education working in camera department on countless features, TV shows, commercials, and music videos.

As a member of the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600, he has gained essential knowledge and techniques in art of cinematography. With over 12 years of experience, he has a keen eye in photographing moving images and harnessing his craft in visual storytelling through composition and lighting.

He shot short films Emma and I & From the Outside Looking in which screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 and 2014. He shot Power Play, a short film that went on to win People's Choice Award at the 2016 My Rode Reel Film Competition.

He lensed Pseudo, which was nominated for Best Action Short at the 2019 Los Angeles International Film Festival. With a strong work ethic, Andy's passion and skill in cinematography grows everyday as there is no project too big or too small.
