Alfonso Bedoya was born on April 16, 1904 in Vicam, Sonora, Mexico, Mexico, is Actor. Mexican character actor who achieved his greatest success in U.S. films. He was born in a tiny village in Mexico of Yaqui heritage and he had a nomadic upbringing, living in numerous places throughout the country including, for a time, Mexico City. He received a private education in Houston, Texas as a teenager, but dropped out and roamed about doing an assortment of jobs. His family, however, brought him back to Mexico City, where he subsequently found work in the struggling Mexican film industry. He appeared in many Mexican films before director John Huston offered him the role of Gold Hat in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948). Bedoya stole the scenes in which he appeared as the smiling cutthroat and delivered the famous line about not needing any "stinking badges". He made a number of popular films in the U.S. in the next nine years, but a drinking problem destroyed his health. He died of a heart attack at the age of 53.

Bedoya found work as a character actor in the US and Mexican film industries in the 1930s to 1940s. During that time, he worked in over 175 Mexican films. His last movie, The Big Country, was released in 1958 after his death.
1948
Bedoya is best remembered as "Gold Hat", the bandit leader who declares "I don't have to show you any stinking badges" in John Huston's 1948 adventure film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. This movie is number 30 on AFI's 100 Years…100 Movies and Bedoya's line is number 36 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movie Quotes list. Bedoya's line has become widely imitated by entertainers.

Bedoya married Gertrude Elizabeth Larky Karas on March 8, 1950, in Mexico City.
1957
Bedoya completed filming The Big Country in November, 1957, in California, and returned to Mexico City on December 8. Eight days later, after a night of partying with manicurist Maria Lucia Solana Martinez, Bedoya died of a heart attack in a Mexico City motel room.
