Alex Prager (b. 1979, lives and works in Los Angeles) is a director and writer, known for Despair (2010), Touch of Evil (2011), Face in the Crowd (2013) and La Grande Sortie (2016).She began her career as a photographer after seeing a William Eggleston Exhibition and has seamlessly expanded into film-making.
Her work consists of elaborately staged scenes that draw inspiration from a wide range of influences and references, including old Hollywood cinema, experimental films, popular culture, and street photography.
Her familiar yet uncanny imagery depicts worlds that synthesize fiction and reality. The highly choreographed nature of her photographs and films embody a visual vocabulary and style that has become uniquely her own.
Prager's film series Touch of Evil, commissioned by The New York Times Magazine won her a 2012 Emmy Award. Despair, Prager's first film was exhibited alongside her photography in the New Photography show at The Museum of Modern Art (2010).
She was also commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet, which inspired her to create La Grande Sortie, a 10-minute film and a body of work that was shown at The Photographer's gallery London (2018). Her first major public commission, Applause, for Times Square Arts: Midnight Moment, New York, took place in the summer of 2017.
In June 2018, a major monograph of her work, Silver Lake Drive, was published by Thames & Hudson.Prager has had solo exhibitions of her work organized at Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle, Switzerland (forthcoming, 2018); The Photographers' Gallery, London, 2018); Des Moines Art Center, IA (2017-2018); Saint Louis Art Museum, MO (2015); Galerie des Galeries, Paris (2015); Goss Michael Foundation, Dallas (2015); National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia (2014); Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (2013); SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, GA (2013); and Foam Photography Museum, Amsterdam (2012).
Select group exhibitions featuring her work include Telling Tales: Contemporary Narrative Photography, McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX (2016-2015); Open Rhapsody, Beirut Exhibition Center, Lebanon (2015); The Noir Effect, Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles (2014); No Fashion, Please: Photography Between Gender and Lifestyle, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (2011); and New Photography, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010).
